Over a decade here, almost anyone over 50 can retire (unless you have a police record) by keeping a modest sum in a Thai bank, not supposed to work in Thailand without a work permit but you could consult remotely, etc. Healthcare, transportation (private cars expensive: taxes), food much cheaper, rents reasonable including best areas of Bangkok. US dollar still goes a long way.
